Listen to an old japanese song. It tells the story of princess Kaguya and how she learned to live. An old animation artist – you might know him from other movies by Studio Ghibli – has chosen this ancient tale for his masterpiece. The longest animation movie they have done so far. And the richest in culture, as it opens a clear view of Japan in the 10th century. If you do not know anything about japanese culture you might accept it as a nice anime. If you understand even a small fraction of the thousand details it refers to - and if you own a noble heart and are able to feel the intention of the tale you will see the most breathtaking movie that ever was drawn with pencil and colors. Director Isao Takahata (for Austrians: you know him for „Heidi“; for all others: you know him for „Grave of the Fireflies“ or „Pom Poko“) uses the full range of japanese drawing styles and images, resembling old japanese paintings as well as modern anime – sometimes even getting into fast, sketchy but always precise imagery, allowing to look into the protagonists hearts. Kaguyahime no monogatari / „The Legend of Princess Kaguya“. Recommended viewing.
