Liz Ryan is correct on so many points and I love the angle of the pain hypothesis. We cant escape the fact that we categorize people in the most primitive ways and this is not going to change any time soon. When we see a person we immediately categorize according to gender, race and age, yet we wonder why employment discrimination is rampant. The challenge is rarely if we are skilled to do the job, but the ability to quickly establish rapport and interpersonal chemistry (or fit as we often refer to in HR) in the course of networking or interviewing. It all feels so very personal.
