Lookout and lets help SAPS to find this guy Parkview police have appealed to the public to be on the lookout for the suspect. The 42-year-old man goes by several aliases, and Gilbert Vusi Msibi and Jabu Sithole, are among some of them he uses. On 12 July last year, the suspect allegedly broke into a house in Parkhurst and severely assaulted an 82-year-old pensioner with a garden spade, before robbing her of various items and leaving her for dead. The suspect then fled in a getaway vehicle but was eventually arrested in Emmerentia. It later emerged that the suspect was wanted for several other crimes and had been appearing in court for various cases while in police custody. Spokesperson for Parkview police, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said he could not confirm the total number of cases related to the suspect, but did confirm that a robbery in Roodepoort was one of the many. “This man is a career criminal, he has been in and out of prison since 1989,” he said. Franco Forleo, son of the elderly victim, said his mother sustained severe brain injuries after the attack and spent three months in intensive care. She is now in a frail care centre and has been unable to speak since. “She was very independent and strong before, she lived in that house for 65 years,” he said. “She was first beaten in the garden before [the perpetrator] dragged her into the house. If it hadn’t been for the intervention of staff at the [nearby] Shell garage, she would have bled out,” he said. When the victim’s family arrived at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 13 October, the case was remanded as the suspect could not be located. Subsequently, the court was informed that the suspect had escaped from custody months earlier, on 28 August, while being treated for an alleged illness at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Forleo expressed his deep disappointment with the court system and correctional services. He felt that despite the police doing their jobs, the system has failed the public. It appeared that no one had noticed the suspect had escaped until he failed to show up for his court appearance. Forleo has written a letter to the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety regarding his concerns. Sergeant Ramovha emphasised that the fugitive is considered armed and dangerous and should not be confronted directly. Members of the public are urged to alert authorities should they have information on his whereabouts. Details: Investigating officer Kenneth Mabaso 011 486 5000.
