Lulu Mall Tales! As many people know Canterbury Tales is a narrative poem by the Fourteenth Century English poet Geoffrey Chaucer (1340-1400) structured as a compilation of twenty nine tales told by pilgrims at an inn on the way to the shrine of Thomas Beckett at Canterbury, which is today the headquarters of the Church of England. The prologue to the poem, which is essentially a part of the syllabi for BA and MA courses in English across the world is considered as a portrait gallery of English social life in the late Medieval period. Shrines are getting a little outdated. Parodying Jawaharlal Nehru, I wrote in an article that shopping malls are modern temples Now, following up this idea, the students of I Semester MA (English) of the University of Calicut have decided to go on a pilgrimage to Lulu Mall at Ernakulam. The team will match the original team created by Geoffrey Chaucer. There will be twenty seven students and two teachers. The stopover will be at Thrissur, probably at Elite Tourist Home, immortalised by Elite Chaatthunni and K Karunakaran. Each pilgrim will narrate a tale at the hotel. The tales will ultimately be put together as a poem titled Lulu Mall Tales by a contemporary Chaucer. We are on the lookout for a Chaucer. Any volunteers?
