M12 SAMUEL BEYER, son of Martin and Elizabeth Schiffer Beyer, was the first of the children to be born in Missouri. He was born at Diamond, Missouri, May 17, 1876. He was three years old when his mother died and two years later his Father remarried. He came to Kansas when he was seven and helped his father on the farm until he was almost twenty. Then he worked as a thresherman and farmhand in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. It was when he was employed by Henry Grimm at Volland that he met his future wife, Mary Caroline Grimm, youngest daughter of Henry and Caroline Grimm. Mary Caroline Grimm, who was born June 3 1882, at Volland Kansas, was the first born to Henry and Caroline Grimm in the new native stone home into which the family moved in 1880. The home no longer belongs to the family but is still a livable, beautiful landmark about eight miles southwest of Alma Kansas. Marys father, Henry Grimm was born June 16 1831 at Wiensburg, Wurtenbur, Germany. He came to America in 1852. Henry had an excellent education, having attended college at Meinfels, Germany. He settled in the old town of Westport, now a part of Kansas City. In 1857 he married Caroline Graf and they settled in a log cabin south east of Alma Kansas. She was born June 26, 1843. Before she got married Caroline cooked for the Indians at Haskell Institute at Lwrence Kansas. It is said that Henry and Caroline got along well with the Indians near their home and in fact were considered friends. Henry enlisted in the Union Army September 1 1862 leaving at home his wife and two children. He was with Company K of the 11th Kansas Regiment. Following the Civil War he was sent with others of his regiment to help quell the Indian uprisings in the west. At the Battle of Platte Bridge on July 25 1865 near now what is Casper Wyoming, he was wounded with one arrow in his back and one in his thigh. Although the doctor despaired of his recovery after the removal of the arrows Henry asked to go back to Kansas with his comrades. He rode in a supply wagon during the weeks it took to get back to Leavenworth where he was discharged from the army September 13 1965. He suffered from these wounds for the rest of his life. The arrows removed from him are on display at the Historical Museum in Topeka, Kansas. After his return to his family, Henry and Caroline prospered. They wanted their children to receive an education so they donated the land and schoolhouse known as District # 26, without a bond issue. In 1880 the family moved into the lovely stone home Henry had built for them. Marys mother died when she was about seven so she was raised by her older sisters. One of her memories was going to the springhouse for butter and milk and her fear of the snakes that were sometimes there. The springhouse still encloses the spring with its potable water. Sam and Mary were married in the court house at Alma Kansas, on December 23, 1901. She was born June 3, 1882. THIS LADY HAS THE DISTINCTION OF HAVING BEEN THE ONE TO COMPILE AND PUBLISH THE FIRST BEYER GENEALOGY IN 1942. They returned to live in a house on her fathers farm, during this time their first son was born. They lived near Volland almost three years and then because of the death of Marys father they moved to the Berwick community near Sabetha, Kansas, here the other five children were born. In 1917 they purchased a farm south of Sabetha and lived in that community until they retired to a home in Sabetha in 1943. Mary had a close, loving relationship with her family. Growing things was a source of joy to her as well many homes have pieces of her handicraft work. Nothing was to great or to small to do for her loved ones. She died from complications following surgery. Sam was a devoted father and staunch friend. He remained in their home until a few months before his death.Sams love for his wife and God never wavered. His last words on his death bed were the first one I will see (in Heaven) will be Mary. Their love for God,each other,their family and their friends is the beautiful heritage they left their children, grandchildren and all those who come after. Samuel died September 29, 1950. His wife Mary died May 8, 1949. They are buried in the cemetery at Sebatha Kansas. Before their marriage she was a teacher Joe and Naomi farmed for many years in the Sabetha area and during the time that Naomi worked as a receptionist and assistant nurse for Dr Rucker Later she was a cook at a restaurant and also for the school lunch program and at the AC rest home At some point Joe took up the vocation of carpentry which he was still doing in July of 1990 Joe is still living on their farm It is from there that he operates his carpentry business.
