MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 96 LETS DO IT AGAIN–THE STAPLES SINGERS (#1, 1975, Lets Do It Again) The last No. 1 song of 1975, it hit the top the week ending December 27, 1975, spending a week at the top. It was the second No. 1 hit for Roebuck Pops Staples and children Mavis, Cleotha, Yvonne and Pervis. The group was a staple at the famed Stax Records in Memphis in the 1970s, but when Stax went into bankruptcy in 1975, it left the group out in the cold. So fellow Chicago native Curtis Mayfield picked them up and brought them to his Curtom Records label, where he gave them the plum job of recording the title song that he wrote and produced for the new Bill Cosby-Sidney Poitier movie called Lets Do It Again. The movie, set in Atlanta, follows Clyde Williams (Poitier) and Billy Foster (Cosby) as blue-collar workers trying to raise money for their foundation, the Brothers and Sisters of Shaka. They convince a young man named Bootney Farnsworth (played by Jimmie J.J. Walker) to fight and hypnotize him. It works: They go to New Orleans and he beats a fighter named 40th Street Black. While Clyde and Billy clean up from betting on Bootney, it turns out that gangsters are not happy over these events and track Billy and Clyde in Atlanta, where the only way they can make good is to do it again: That is to have another fight involving Bootney, but they cant hypnotize him this time. So the pair make bets with both rival gangster groups involved in the fight that its going to end in a draw. Youll NEVER guess how this one ends up. Lets Do It Again, regaled in its silky, honey-tasted soul with Mavis Staples on lead vocal, would unfortunately be the groups last big hit and second No. 1 hit after 1972s Ill Take You There. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
