ME THE BHATAKTEY ATIMA It is 2 in the night, and I have got up, am fully awake, and cant go to sleep, I don’t know why my mind is taking me on a tour to the golf club, there is that little pond near the Govt. house side. It is such a beautiful small round pond with water lilies growing in it, their broad round leaves, their Pinkish and red Lotus flowers, there are small fishes you can see red in colour darting between the leaves of the lilies, the clear water. This is part of the garden. With colour full dailias blooming all around. The British had this sense of perfection they built this so that a person gets enchanted by the sheer beauty of the place, It is so silent here, with just some crickets chirping in some far of trees. You can go up to the Govt. house and see the P.A.C. people, there is a soldier doing the march, you feel you are in front of the Buckingham Palace looking at the soldier, then there is one soldier standing at attention in a single man shed with a Baynut on his rifle, these Baynuts are just ceremonial now, they were used during the two world wars, the rifle is a 303 very old and obsolete. You go down the garden again there is such a huge expance of green grass, you keep walking. Golf was a British Sport played by the British Sahibs. The Golf course was their Gift they left behind for us. They even constructed a small round place where the players could take shelter if it were to rain, it is white in colour with eight pillars in the roman design, with a small round roof, or it was also a shelter for the memsahibs to sit in while their Husbands did the putting, they would have a small basket with sandwiches and cake, for it would be a picnic cum sports. This lies on the lower golf course, just above the Drain, that 2x2 meter drain that goes out into the cliffs, as if it was pising towards the echo hill. On the opposite side is a rather big open round hut, covered with grass round sloping roof, this is constructed by our people, it has benches made of round pine logs, a real rustic taste for the odd tourist that happens to venture there. There is a road that lead to the flag staff, . Another road to the same place comes from the Danger Point on the lower Golf course you stand there and get a breath taking view of the Plains, of echo Hill. You are tempted to shout , but then restrain your self, but then there is no one else looking at you, and you yell Heloow, and an echo is heard Heloow, and if you are romantic You shout I LOVE YOU, stammer a bit but say your DAMES name , and the mountain dutifully responds with an echo. You go up to the flag staff, it carries a flag when the governor is in Nainital. In the night a Bugilar will sound his Buigle, Beating the retreat, how beautiful it sounds in the silent night. From here you can see across the Hill to the Hanuman Ghari, the Observatory, the road coming from the plains to Nainital, down below it is the crumbling of the rocks to form a Bajri, Luckley all of Nainital Houses have been made from this Bajri. The Pathans still cary their Load of Bajri on their Khachars, all the way to Nainital.. Come back you come across the Govt House, Zoo. It houses a pair of Beavers, some Pandas, a hooting Monkey, some Phesents. These are brought ever year from Lucknow, because they are not accustomed to the heat there. The Beavers have lots of branches of Pine trees which they munch to make a house in the centre of the Beavers pool. A bit further is the Govt. House swimming Pool, and thanks to that pool, for people reported swimming in that pool were punished, but that gave our Principal LEW an idea , why not build our own swimming pool. We reach the danger point, but if you were to take the other road from the flag staff to Golfy you would come to a dried stream, with two large Boulders of sand stone, rounded in shape by the water flowing over them during the rainy season. They look as if some one has made them in cement and put them there. There are wallnut trees on the lower Golfy, the trees where we would hang up side down by our legs bent, we would see who can hang the longest on the branches. Some boys would be only the spectators, for it was the naughty that did these tamashas. There is a lonely Chir tree, besides which is the pagdandi to the cliffs, the stream. You cant get water any where around, if you are dying of thirst, then venture down to the stream, but then you have to be adventurist. All the boys of Sherwood are adventurist some little, some more, some to the extreme. Golf is a rich mans game, you pay for the man that carries you bag of assorted golf clubs, although you might use only one club, but you make the caddy Lug the whole lot, then the Golf Balls are equally expensive. It is not that you know how to play the game, it is that you wear a Golf cap, put on Golf Shoes, and pretend that you are TIGER WOODS, In Lucknow if you are stinking rich, and have the right sourses, then you have to be a member of the Golf Club, people just go there to Booz, and say Hellow to the other people, a lot of walking here and there, and then you are proud that you are a master of the game MY FOOT. From Danger point you take the road that goes right round the back of the two golf courses and goes up to Dorthys seat. It is a beautiful road. These Goras must be mad to make such beautiful roads in the Hills, just for the sake of taking a walk. Some of our boys would TEHLAOO the All Saints Dames on that road, because it has nil traffic, no tourists, you are alone, and you make the best use of your time. HEY TELL THE GIRL YOU LOVE HER, Damit there is no better place to say that, with all the silence, except for the rustling of the leaves. You can take the short cut to the bottom of the cliffs green grass slope, you will come across pine trees in their hundreds, or thousands. From the top look to your right you can see a whole forest of pine trees, how beautiful they look. If you still have the Dame with you , give her a KISS, wow you did it. Damit you didn’t have the guts, but the sight of the pine trees, the cool breez made you do it, BRAVO. Now one KISS is enough, the Dame is shocked, dazed, she dosent know what hit her, you can apologize on the way down to Tiffin top, but in your heart you must be chuffed up that you did the right thing. YOU BUGGER now I am feeling sleepy again, so GOOD NIGHT. G.Y.KHAN ( MULLAH ) 68. F.T. now retired living in Shakti Nagar, Lucknow. Mob. 9559935215.
