MEMBERS INFO - TRAVEL to/from NORTH AFRICA Yesterday, Friday 8th August 2014, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) with regards to the current EBOLA pandemic occurring in West Africa. At this time we stress that Spain is at minimum risk and there is no cause for concern!!!.....However, if you are considering travel to or from Morocco then be aware that security checks have increased dramatically in view of the seriousness of the disease and its virile nature. Ebola virus disease (EVD) or Ebola haemorrhagic fever is a severe and often deadly illness in humans. The disease has high mortality rate, killing up to 90% of people who are infected. The ongoing 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak is considered to be the largest and longest outbreak ever recorded killing at least 932 people and infecting more than 1,700 to date since March in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria and Liberia. According to WHO, EVD first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, in Nzara, Sudan, and in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter was in a village situated near the Ebola River from which the disease takes its name. How does it spread? It is still unclear how Ebola is spread. However, it is believed that the first patient became infected through contact with an infected animal. Human-to-human transmission can occur through direct contact with blood, organs or other body fluids or exposure to objects such as needles and syringes that have been contaminated. Ebola can also be transmitted from men who have recovered from the disease through semen as it is infectious for up to 7 weeks. Infected dead bodies can spread Ebola as they are still infectious so mourners who have direct contact with the body of deceased person are at risk. Symptoms I dont think we are at that stage yet that we need to start telling you what to look for as there is very little risk of it spreading as yet but we reiterate that if you are travelling......or buying hand bags from the Looky Looky man.........beware!!!.......(the hand bag bit was a joke by the way!!!)........And besides......a little edjumacation on the subject dont hurt!!! :)
