MEMORIES! Been a bit lax over this lately, so heres your starter for ten. Contributions have been run together for the sake of clarity. Does anyone recall The Bridge Inn, Mill Street? I have heard stories about a Mr G Leake, who used to go there on a Sunday morning to have his hair cut and to get a pint. Has anyone else done this during the time it was open? The Bridge Inn was near the roundabout, because its car park can still be seen close to the Congleton shipwreck. It was by the roundabout, just before the DIY shop. The car park still has the name along the wall by the boat. Duffeys chip shop! Duffeys was where DIY store is now, next to Dales selling-out shop by the steps. It had a fire. I used to go to school with the daughter; we called her Peckerwood as wood was her surname I think. They moved to Leek after the fire. The pub he ran was the Bears Head. As you came onto Mill Street, it was like cream-painted textured walls outside with a tiny window. As a child I always thought it looked Spanish. My Uncle Clem ran The Boars Head, which was behind what’s now the bus stop. Horton’s used to own a DIY shop on the corner of Mill Street; it is the restaurant now. Mrs Horton was a tall, thin well-spoken old lady. There was a pie shop across from the DIY shop near the Three Arrows. I remember the pie shop but not the name. If you timed it right you would get them straight out of the oven. How about the fire station? Roughly where the police station is. There was Cyril Oakess shoemenders shop where the entrance to Maxpress is. I remember Clem Goodwin. He used to drive us to school in his taxi. That taxi had really comfortable leather seats, like armchairs! They were big cars and us kids sat in the back, and probably looked something like The Anthill Mob off Wacky Races. I used to drive for Clem when he lived at the Masonic house and Boars Head. He had Zephyr Mk4 and Zephyr Mk6. His wife Joan was a fantastic, kind person. I recall my dad (Big Mike Niklas) playing music at the Bridge Inn, I think he referred to it as the Bridge Hotel. Im not sure if it was because I was little but I thought it was enormous and on a tight corner . . . Im probably wrong about that, though! The Bridge Inn had a big curved porch over the front door, and the back of the pub, seen from near where Aldi is now, looked like the bow of a ship. There was a cut-out of a chef/cook outside indicating that they did food. Amazing what you can recall when someone/something jogs your memory.
