MENINGITIS. An a cute inflammation of the pia and arachnoid covering of the brain with spread into the cerebrospinal fluid(CSF). Most commonly due to invasion by bacteria( pyogenic meningitis), and less by viruses( aseptic meningitis), or fungi( fungal meningitis), tubercle bacilli ( tuberculous meningitis). PREDISPOSING FACTORS; Low immunity( HIV, diabetics etc). Prematurity and septicemia. infection in the nose, sinuses, ear, throat and lungs. Penetrating injury of the skull and spinal column. Congenital malformation of the brain and spine. CLINICAL FEATURES; Neck stiffness. Positive kerning sign. Altered level of consciousness. Headaches. Fever. Vomiting convulsion. Photophobia. TREATMENT; Immediate inpatient management.
