METZ, LOUIS L. 07/19/1914-07/02/1991 MEDINA, NY BORN: MEDINA, NY, FATHER: LOUIS E., MOTHER: KATHERYN DIEHL, S2 U.S. NAVY, WW II Louie was my life-long friend, having met him when I was 12 or so. He would have been about 50 then and we initially shared an interest in, of all things, coin collecting. He knew my family and both bespoke well of the other. Both he and my dad were WWII Navy vets. Over the years, we spent many an hour discussing coins, women [he was a life-long bachelor, but had some GREAT insights to share], life, politics [he was the only person that I knew who subscribed to a Toronto newspaper since he thought that the domestic ones were not telling us the truth!], and the world in general. Every time I went home after leaving Medina, no trip was complete without a visit to him. On the day that my dad died [June 29, 1991], I spent a couple of hours with him [by now he was 76] as he helped me to mourn my loss. It was at my dads funeral showing [July 02] that I learned of his death. My two best male friends and role models both dying so close together was heartbreaking. I attended HIS funeral on July 05 and placed a copy of the New York Times and Coin World newspapers in his casket thinking that he might want some perpetual reading materials. :) My mom died on July 04, 2011, so this is a tough week for me. As most of his friends were old [or dead], I was pressed into service as one of his pall bearers. The Twilight Zone-like nature of the irony that I was carrying the body of my friend after our nearly 30 years of friendship still stays with me to this day. He is buried only a few yards from my dad and I certainly visit both sites whenever I can. I imagine that they have had some interesting conversations! I expect to be in Medina in late August for my HS reunion. Rest in Peace, ol buddy. Your avuncular guidance and wisdom bestowed upon me has not been forgotten. I am a better man for having known you. Give my regards to your brother, Harry, and his wife. RIP.
