STATUS UPDATE-ELAC and QULA and Montessori Task Force-Trish reported out on the meeting with the Early Learning Council on Sept 4th. Tina Patel, Moe Hickey, Susan Florsheim, Lyndi Spears, Deborah Lane, and Josylynn DeHerrera, attended some part or all of the day. Trish, and Deborah and her Owner/ Director addressed the Council at 3pm for four minutes each with their concerns over the new CYFD changes to the regulations regarding 1. An objection to smaller class sizes; accepting Montessori teacher credentials as more than adequate preparation and superior to the 45 hour credential; having CYFD acknowledge our national accreditations as five star worthy; and asking for consideration of how we operate to be included into the regulations as they do in New York. The council was very responsive to our concerns, were completely unaware of the MACTE accreditation, said that our voice was clearly missing on the council and they asked if we would be willing to get on the agenda for a presentation to tell them more about our community. The Bureau Chief, Alejandra Rebolledo Rea, asked that Trish email her to set up a time to present. A meeting with Alejandra is also pending with Roxanne Rosa of Our Montessori School and the newly formed Montessori Task force under QELA. WORKSHOPS-Rio Grande Montessori Charter School has hired Dr. Joyce Pickering to speak to parents on October 8th from 6-830 at Escuela del Sol/Harwood Center about reading and again for teachers only on Oct 9th from 8am-1pm at Escuela del Sol/Harwood Center about directing reading instruction for many different learning styles. The cost of the workshop will be $50 per person. Bonnie Dodge will get the flyer ready to send out and distribute to your schools and families. Escuela will send out an evite and take registrations online. DISCUSSION- Upcoming meetings-we talked about the need to meet as administrators to build up our businesses and schools. Trish suggested that Cottonwood is willing to host a short Saturday morning brunch & lecture on Women in Business with local attorney and author Jessica Matthews as a way of starting off the year. CALENDAR-it was suggested that 9AM might be a better time for everyone to meet, once classes have settled in so we set next meeting: October 21 AT FLYING STAR RIO GRANDE at 9:00 and 4:30. CONTACTS-Bonnie reported that she has made contact with Sage Montessori School and the Montessori Charter School and now has email contacts for the Administrators so that we can invite them to join the network. She will email those to Trish later to send out to everyone. OPEN AGENDA ITEMS- 1. One director asked that we all encourage professional courtesy among the schools with regard to enrollment by encouraging families to stay with their programs until they complete the three year cycle before they move onto another charter or elementary school. 2. Bonnie suggested meeting at a different school each month as the admin network, and then also for professional development so that our teachers can have time together to learn from one another. GRADITUDE! –WHAT GREAT MEETINGS. It was so refreshing to be able to meet with and speak to you all. It was inspiring to know that we all share the same philosophy and challenges and are willing to come together to support one another. MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED! We very much look forward to seeing more of you in time. Please do let us know when the best time would be for you to meet and we will do all we can to work around your schedules to ensure that everyone can attend! Respectfully Submitted, Trish Nickerson, Cottonwood School For NMMN 9/17/2014
