Major Announcement… UMass Boston and University of Limerick to twin both Universities on St. Patrick’s Day Professor Don Barry, President of the University of Limerick and the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) Winston E. Langley will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on St. Patrick’s Day, Monday 17th March, to formally launch collaborative programmes between UMass Boston, USA and the University of Limerick. They are pictured here ahead of the signing with UL’s Vice-President Academic & Registrar, Prof Paul McCutcheon (right). The purpose of the MOU is to develop academic and educational cooperation on the basis of equality and reciprocity and to promote relations and mutual understanding between the two universities. The partnership will facilitate mobility of students, faculty, and staff; development of joint scholarly and research projects; and active engagement and interaction with both public and private sectors in both Boston and Limerick. Speaking in advance of the signing event which will take place in Boston, Professor Barry said: “UL is 41 years old with over 13,000 students; UMass Boston is 49 years old with over 16,000 students. Both are young, vibrant, and rapidly growing urban academic institutions striving to pursue excellence in research and scholarship. Both focus on outstanding student learning experiences and outcomes, promote service to urban communities, and address global societal issues. With an affinity to innovative discovery and learning in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), nursing and health sciences, education, business, public policy and public management, and international studies, as well a passion for creativity in the performing arts, UMass Boston and UL are embarking on a new collaborative venture as twin institutions of higher education. With a serious intent to learn from one another and grow together, this partnership will achieve outcomes that neither institution would be able to accomplish on its own.” The largest number of UL’s international students come from the United States of America and there are currently 290 US students studying at UL. This number is set to rise as the University increases it’s internationalisation as part of the President’s Pioneering & Connected Strategic Plan”. UMass Boston Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Winston Langley: “I see this partnership as one which will be strong, rich, and long-term. It will allow both the University of Massachusetts Boston and the University of Limerick to continue their respective urban missions and commitments to produce scholars who are globally oriented and enabling of social change, in our own communities and abroad. Both of us are fairly strong on our own; together, however, our impact in the areas of research and scholarship will be much greater and more far-reaching.”
