Malaysians be warned - water shortages will become more and more - TopicsExpress

Malaysians be warned - water shortages will become more and more prevalent with global warming and the redirection of oceanic currents. This has nothing to do with politics, and more to do with ecology and Malaysians seemingly unslakable lust for wealth and social status. We could go on about how the Selangor government is to blame, but I would argue that unrestricted development of lands adjacent to vital catchment areas is also impairing dams ability to conserve and collect water for use. Also, the lack of a maintenance culture to ensure that water wastage was kept to a minimum has not helped either. Global warming would not have been an issue had investments been made ten years ago - now, it is too late. Besides, why harp about the water issue in Selangor? what about Sarawak, which has the longest river in Malaysia? as for infrastructure breakdowns in Selangor, Pakatan is basically being taken to task for the sins of their predecessors, and unfortunately the two kinds of people that we need most - the engineers and the environmentalists - are not in Pakatan, while those in Barisan have ceased to see themselves as shouldering a duty to the rakyat and for the rakyat. Just as how in the Quran it is said that the Sabaeans were punished for their impiety by the loss of the Marib dam, I see Malaysia also being punished by God for the sins of their leaders and the rakyat who stood by them without a thought. The tragedy here is that it would have been very, very easy to avert the water crisis that looms ahead of us now.
