Many of you have met my grandma Fern, and a lot of you know her well. We are losing her as I write this-- not suddenly; mostly she is sleeping deeply. My mama and aunt have been there, and I was able to talk to her briefly. Words were hard, but she let out a wonderfully familiar sigh when I said, Its Ashley. And she very clearly enunciated I LOVE YOU. She even asks about me when shes lucid. The bond Ive shared with my mothers mother is too extraordinary to put into words. She was my everything, and I was her pet. Shes lived a life worth writing about-- you would be in awe of her 96 years here on earth-- the strength it took to endure unimaginable pain and loss, and the attitude she chose for her life that allowed the immeasurable joy. No tears, she always said. Life goes on. And hers did without cancer or disease-- her nurses often said theyd have to remind themselves she was 4 years shy of 100. If you knew her, you knew she was amazing...in every sense of the word. And if you know me, you know how much I loved and needed her, and how different my life will be without her.
