Meriam Ibrahim Freed From Prison in Sudan SuccessRaised a Christian by her mother after her Muslim father left her family, Meriam was imprisoned with her toddler son, Martin, in May and her marriage declared invalid by a court in Sudan. Meriam gave birth to her daughter, Maya, while shackled to the floor of her cell. On June 23, Meriam was freed but still unable to leave the country; she and her family took refuge in the US Embassy. Finally, in mid-July, Meriam was able to leave Sudan. She is now in New Hampshire to start a new life. Read more about how you helped to secure Meriams release. South Carolina Man Who Dragged Dog Convicted of Felony Animal Cruelty SuccessWhen two women saw a man, Roger Dennis Owens, dragging a young pit bull tied to his pickup truck, they alerted authorities. The dog, Andra Grace, was so badly injured that many thought she would not survive. More than 2,700 Care2 members rallied to demand that South Carolina authorities upgrade the charges against Owens from a misdemeanor to a felony. On July 15, a judge sentenced Owens to 10½ years in prison — and Andra Grace is now in a loving home. Read more about how you helped get justice for Andra Grace. 110 Research Chimps from Notorious Lab Retire to Sanctuary SuccessThe 2000 CHIMP Act decreed that government-owned primates who are no longer needed for research should be retired to the national chimpanzee sanctuary, Chimp Haven in Louisiana. Unfortunately, the law limited the amount of funding the National Institutes of Health (NIH) could use to do this. In 2012, the NIH said it would send 110 chimps who had been used for research in the New Iberia Research Center to the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. More than 8,000 Care2 members signed a petition urging that the chimps be released to a sanctuary. Late last year, Congress amended the CHIMP Act to allow the NIH to send all the chimps to a sanctuary. On July 2, the last of the chimps arrived at Chimp Haven to spend the rest of their lives outside of cages. Read more about the fight to gain freedom for 110 chimps. Update on the Petition in Memory of AnnaLeah and Mary Karth SuccessAnnaLeah and Mary Karths lives were cut short in an accident involving two semi trucks on May 4, 2013. The Karth family started a petition demanding new measures to decrease driver fatigue and improve underride guards, which help to keep vehicles from sliding under trucks. More than 11,000 Care2 members have signed. In May, the Karth family traveled to Washington, D.C. to deliver the petition to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Their efforts have made a difference: In July, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it will take action on one of the Karths requests and take the first steps to change the requirements for underride guards, to prevent horrific injuries and deaths. Like the Karths, we can make the world a better place for all by taking action. Update on Detroit’s Plan to Shut Off Poor Families’ Water SuccessThe United Nations says water is a basic human right. When Detroit started turning off the water for poor families this past spring, more than 40,000 Care2 members quickly took action and demanded the city not do this. The midwestern city’s struggles are well-known -- it is the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy — but for Detroit to deprive its residents of water is to endanger their health and violate their human rights. In late July, the city announced it will suspend water shutoffs until August 25, so it has time to address many residents’ overdue water bills. This is welcome news, but many families could still lose access to water in their own homes. Tell Detroit not to shut off poor families’ water! Care2 Members in the News SuccessCare2 members not only start thousands of online petitions -- they also take their advocacy into the streets. In Massachusetts, the Boston Globe reported on thousands protesting to save a beloved grocery chain, Market Basket. In Iowa, the Des Moines Register featured Care2 member Rita Mason, who started a petition signed by more than 74,000 people, to protest a zoo in the Merle Hay Mall. In South Carolina, the local press reported about a Care2 petition with nearly 3,000 signatures to reinstate Joe Maffo, who lost his contract with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources to remove alligators after he refused to euthanize one. Support “Gator Joe”!
