Many people will say that the push to be politically correct and not offend or bother anyone has gone too far; that this is ridiculous. And in some ways, I agree with that. But not for the reason you might think. The real problem with this situation is that it allows the county in one fell swoop to both villainize the Islamic community, for appearing to be the grinches who stole Christmas, and also completely ignore what they actually wanted. They wanted just two of their holidays to be included on the school calendar, to share in religious freedom with the other commonly practiced religions of MoCo. Instead, the Christian and Jewish holidays will be relabeled secularly but still allowed time off, so that we still get days off centered around our days of faith (or lack thereof, given the increasingly secular nature of Christmas), while Muslims still get no days off for their holidays and now do not even have the basis to ask for equal treatment. While I completely understand that we cant just have endless numbers of days off, did the county really believe this was a fair solution? Or did they believe it was the easiest solution to eliminate basis for complaint?
