Margaret Thatcher was the longest-serving and first female British - TopicsExpress

Margaret Thatcher was the longest-serving and first female British Prime Minister of the 20th century. The leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990, she was preceded by Edward Heath and succeeded by John Major in that position. The Winter of Discontent (winter of 78-79) caused mass-dissatisfaction with the Labour Party, leading to her election. Two major events that occured during her incumbencies were the Falklands War and the Westland Affair. While The first increased her popularity, the second hurt her reputation as a leader. Accordingly, she had been getting steadily more unpopular over time, but it was the Community Charge, a glorified and highly controversial poll tax that she endorsed, which really caused the end of her leadership, and she resigned in 1990. ~SPF
