Match Report:- 22 March 2014, Vessy Sports Grounds. GSFC 4-5 International XI Gill, Cleary (2), Juan Jock. Geneva Scots opened their 2014 campaign with a narrow defeat at a damp Vessy, in a very open game. After kicking off, GSFC conceded the opener in the first minute. Your reporter missed the goal as he was still searching for his notepad and pen. A sustained period of Intl XI pressure followed, with goalkeeper Ricky Verry called into action several times. GSFC grew into the game and almost equalised on 25 minutes when Ally Bainton rounded the keeper, but a covering defender just got back as Ally prepared to tap into the empty net. The deserved equaliser did come moments later as Captain Mike Gill carried on his hot streak from last season and tapped in after a corner was spilled. He just cant stop scoring!! 2 Intl XI goals in 3 minutes at the end of the first half had the Scots on the rope as the halftime whistle blew. The first was a good header from a fine back post cross - the second a nice chip over Verra, although the scorer was well offside when he received the ball. Half time score 1-3. The second half started just as badly as a defensive mix up allowed a tap in for a fourth goal. However, there followed a stunning comeback as the Scots scored 3 unanswered goals in 10 mins. A beautiful freekick from Conor was quickly followed a a fine sidefoot finish from the same player. The goal of the match followed as a fine passing move was finished nicely by debutant Juan Jock. Suddenly the scores were level and the Scots were on top. Sadly A 5th goal was lost after a cute diving header just beat Ricky Verra. The match finished with International XI well on top, and Ricky had to make a string of good saves, with one fingertip save that was incredible. He has finally found his true calling. Disappointing result, but good performance against opponents we usually struggle against. Much hope for the rest of the season. Website Man Of The Match:- Ricky Verra.
