Mayors Call on FCC to Uphold Net Neutrality b4in.org/j58H The U.S. Conference of Mayors is demanding the Federal Communications Commission ban Internet ‘fast lanes’ to protect Net neutrality. The mayors, which includes leaders of the U.S.’s largest cities, unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the FCC to support a free and open Internet as outlined in its original Open Internet Order. “The U.S. Conference of Mayors supports securing a commitment to transparency and the free flow of information over the Internet, including no blocking of lawful websites and no unreasonable discrimination of lawful network traffic,” the resolution reads, adding that the FCC must “enshrine principles of transparency and non-discrimination into future regulations about how the Internet works.” The mayors also urged the FCC to “preempt state barriers to municipal broadband service as a significant limitation to competition in the provision of Internet access.” The mayors are also calling on both Congress and the Obama administration to offer support. Congress, the mayors added, should also use its “lawmaking power to enshrine access to a free and open Internet and give the FCC a clear mandate” if necessary. The Conference of Mayors does not have any legislative authority, so its resolution is more symbolic than anything else. It does, however, send the government a clear signal that voters are interested in the issue and could potentially affect how some constituents vote in the future, particularly if Congress is seen as doing nothing to protect online freedom.
