Me: is this the way to the beach? (Pointing ahead) Old Man: Yes it is but use the path to your left. (I walk a few meters to the left, I can still see the sea to my right. I turn to a young woman walking behind me); Me: Cant I just go up to the beach to my right? Woman: Naa you cant, you need to walk up a few meters more, then you can turn right. (I ignore the womans advice, turn right and begin to descend towards the sea. I see some rocks in the water, two women are having a chat standing on a rock the two women look up as I approach) 1st Lady: (speaking fanti) Please go back you are not supposed to be here. 2nd Lady: (pointing up the beach) please thats the mens section, you can access the beach from there. ( I look past where they were standing, on another rock was an old woman, squatting, bare butted. I get the message......I quickly turn around. The Woman I spoke to earlier still within view) Me: Why do you defecate on the beach? Woman: Its the way we do things here. This area is for the women, further up is the area for men. Me: But I saw a public toilet nicely painted just before you get to the beach. Why do you leave that place and do it in public? Messing up the beach? Woman: That place is unclean, why would I go there when I can do it in a naturally airconditioned environment? I realise she on her way to the air conditioned place of convenience. ( I ask no more questions.) I obediently walk in the direction of the mens section. I see another public toilet for the men. There is some fish being dried in the sand close by..... At the seafront same kind of rocks are in the sea, a few kids are playing around doing thier own thing..... I ask myself, have we, the previlidged educated few, failed our rural, less educated folks? Opinion leaders, Family heads, Chiefs and thier sub chiefs, could they have done something about it? Can this unhealthy embarrassing mindset be reversed? Will we do something about it? .....
