Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has announced that Diego Aponte has become its new chief executive and president. Diego Aponte, previously vice president, takes over the role from his father, Gianluigi Aponte, who founded the shipping line in the 1970s. “It is important that we keep looking forward and that we prepare the company for the future,” said Gianluigi Aponte. “The board and I firmly believe that Diego, supported by his senior management, will deliver continued success for MSC and its customers. “We already have a number of projects under way which will help improve our overall service offering to clients, whilst improving our efficiencies. It is an exciting time for MSC.” Gianluigi Aponte will assume a new role as group executive chairman and will continue to oversee all group related activities and help his son shape the future of MSC. Diego Aponte said: “MSC has a proud heritage. Over the past 40 years my father founded and led MSC from a one-ship operator to become the second largest container shipping line in the world. “He has created an influential global brand; MSC inspires passion, dedication and entrepreneurism wherever you look. “The management team, together with the family board, will continue to work hard to keep MSC as special today as it was in 1970.” Mr Diego Aponte joined MSC in 1997 and has worked in various functions across the business including line management where he managed all aspects of the trade. In recent years, Diego Aponte has taken more responsibility in the wider running of the company, serving as vice president while as chairman of Terminal Investment Limited he has also overseen the growth and strategic direction of MSC’s port division. Widely regarded as one of the most astute men in shipping Gianluigi Aponte, a former master, started MSC in 1970 with a small tweendecker. He now controls a fleet of almost 465 containerships with total capacity of 2.4m teu. Last year he won Containerisation International’s lifetime achievement award. Diego Aponte has taken an increasingly important role in MSC over the last few years and was one of the key players behind the formation of the failed P3 Network and now the proposed 2M alliance with Maersk Line.
