Memories of Thunder Bridge: Prior to 1963, there was a fondly remembered bridge in Innisfil that connected modern-day Foster Drive (Highland Dr./Cres. prior to 1982) with the existing portion of Tollendal Rd (now accessed via Hurst Drive). This whole section of land was annexed to the City of Barrie in 1982. The entire road prior to 1963 went from Yonge St. (Hwy 11), over Thunder Bridge, all the way to Lake Simcoe and was collectively known as Tollendal Rd. It was one of the main routes folks in this area used to access the Lake and Government Dock at the end of Dock Rd. I have recently taken an interest in this bridge as I grew up in this area in the 80s AND no pictures are known to exist - only peoples memories of it. I recently went to the site where it once stood to take some pictures and video. As you can see, little remains except part of the bridges concrete foundation along with the metal guard rail in place of where the bridge once was. Most of the area is incredibly overgrown with bush and trees but you can clearly see where the bridge would have connected Foster Dr. over the tracks to the remaining portion of Tollendal Rd. off of Hurst Dr. Be sure to check out the pinned video on the top of this page and our invitation to join us this month of a historical nature walk in this area. And if you have any memories or know of anyone who may have pictures of Thunder Bridge, please get in touch!
