Mentorship Monday: Alleghany Meadows : Steven Colby Alleghany Meadows, Carbondale, CO: “Steven and I have worked together for 16 years. During this time the roles of mentor/mentee have switched back and forth numerous times in a non-linear, organic manner. Depending on circumstances and context, we give to each other the stimulation and drive to accomplish much more than would otherwise be possible. Steven is an incredible painter and potter, combining his sensory passion for expression into surface and form of fired clay. Our relationship as friends/artists/teachers is like electricity, flowing strongest when polarities are opposite, completing the circuit to light it all up, from our separate studio practices to our work with the Artstream to our fun times cooking meals together. “ Steven Colby, Aspen, CO: Half of my life and the whole span of my time in clay - I’ve spent working with Alleghany. From the beginning my mentor has always made me feel of use, continuing to challenge me in expanding my mind and my skills to become yet more useful. As we work separately and together in our studios, our classrooms and our galleries, Alleghany and I share the common goals of excellence, selflessness and a joy and responsibility to our lineage as potters. Having a true mentor means having a teacher, partner, friend and trusted advisor always at the ready to share adventures, celebrate wins and cushion failures. Inside the enduring struggle I maintain a confidence knowing there is a safe place to lean and a pride in knowing that I can be leaned upon. Exercising trust, commitment and fearlessness in my work as an artist, gallerist and educator is possible largely because of the solid support that I enjoy from my mentor.
