Message from Mark Kelly: It seems that a recent tweet of mine about meet & greets has caused some upset to a few people so I thought it would be a good idea to clarify what I, and presumably, the rest of Marillion, think about meet & greets. Firstly, all meet & greets are not the same. The ones we organise are usually for hardcore fans as a thank you and we usually enjoy meeting people who are clearly big fans of our music and have in many cases been following us for some years. Unfortunately, there are a few who use the meeting as an opportunity to tell us how bad they thought our last album was or how they preferred the band when Fish was in it but thankfully they are a rarity. When you think about it, who wouldnt enjoy meeting people who want to tell you how much they enjoy your work? The other sort of meet and greet, and the sort I was thinking of when I called it a Grip n Grin or Shake & Fake was the sort that are organised by the promoter, radio station or agent in return for some favour like air-play or as an opportunity to impress some friends. We are usually asked months in advance if we will agree to do these but when the day comes we are often tired and would much rather spend an extra hour at the hotel before the show than turn up early for a meet and greet. To be fair, these affairs are often filled with hard core fans who are very excited to meet us too so are worthwhile doing. Anyone who follows me on twitter knows that many of my posts are made with the intention of hopefully raising a smile. Maybe I make the mistake of thinking that Im tweeting to a bunch of like minded friends ( all 8000+ of them) and assume that they will find the same things funny as I do. If you were offended by my recent posts then I am sorry. I didnt intend in any way to cheapen the special relationship Marillion shares with our fans. If we took the same approach as some bands and avoid all contact there would be no possibility for anyone to feel a personal slight but I think on balance we would all be poorer for the decision. I hope you agree.
