Message from the Director for those who have not received the email D ear Enactus Friends, Happy New Year! SIFE rebranded to Enactus enactus.org I am writing to introduce two special people. African Nazarene University Enactus Kenya alumnus Ms. Janiffer Mwikali, currently assisting with Enactus Kenya Students and University Relations and Moi University Enactus Kenya Alumnus Ms. Winnie Chebet, assisting in Enactus Kenya Business Relations. Mentorship Program for Enactus Kenya affiliate Universities Ms. Mwikali is recruiting Enactus Kenya alumnus to serve as mentors to our 19 affiliate universities. The objectives of this mentorship program include:- 1. To promote the quality and productivity of graduate students from Enactus Kenya affiliate universities 2. To propose business approaches to solving challenges facing the country 3. To assist Enactus teams come up with and implement quality community outreach projects If interested please email Ms Mwikali at enactusintern@irenkenya by February 20, 2014. Partnership Opportunities at Enactus Kenya Ms. Winnie Chebet, seeks ideas and contacts to promote linkages between Enactus Kenya and organizations in Kenya. The Scenario and the Need The Kenyan Population is estimated to be 43 million with close to 60% aged below 20 years. University undergraduate enrollment in the 22 Kenyan public universities is close to 200, 000 while that of the 23 private universities is around 35,000. Kenyan employers, ranging from government to corporations are seeking to employ skilled graduates and to finance youth enterprises. According to the Federation of Kenya Employers, more than 50 % of the hired graduates have nice degrees that they cannot defend in the field due to mismatch of training programs with the labour market. A study by IPOS Synovate (2012) revealed that Kenyan universities do not produce high quality graduates due to overflowing classes, strained facilities, shortage of trainers, weak institutional quality assurance mechanisms and low enrolment in technical courses that are supposed to trigger and nurture innovation. Can we enhance the quality of Kenyan graduates and transform Kenyas youthful population into a demographic dividend? How does Enactus Kenya intervene? Enactus chose to work with university students because they are the next generation of policy makers, business leaders and managers, opinion leaders and entrepreneurs. The Universities also act as a hub of Innovative minds full of passion and potential. The universities draw students from all parts of the country who go through a minimum 4 year academic program. For the last 12 years, Enactus Kenya has intervened through community outreach projects, trainings, thematic events, annual national business competition and an annual World Cup that covers 39 countries worldwide and 11 from Africa. Each Enactus (K) affiliate creates a students team with a minimum of 50 members. Each university student team implements a minimum of 4 community outreach projects, which are then submitted to business leaders during the annual Enactus Kenya National Business and Entrepreneurship competition. Enactus (K) proposes to provide a platform for employers to give feedback to university leadership about the quality of graduates and implement activities that enhance productivity of Kenyan University graduates. Businesses and organizations chose to work with Enactus (K) to identify and recruit talent, get access to Enactus students, mentor and nurture next crop of business leaders, nurture business ideas, grow their markets and practice Corporate Social Responsibility. Some choose to implement pilot projects and do research. For more details on how to assist please email Ms. Chebet at chebet@irenkenya Thank you and I look forward to your positive feedback. Sincerely, James Shikwati Enactus Kenya Country Director Director Inter Region Economic Network
