Mesut Ozil: What Arsenal fans can expect from their new star signing Arsene Wenger gets Real Madrid playmaker for 42.5 million pounds on a 5 year contract. As the clock ticked down on a nervous transfer deadline day, I found myself hard pressed to keep track of the number of players that the team were being linked with. Nervous and jittery, I found myself hopeful when I saw news filtering in about the potential transfer of Mesut Ozil. A hardened gunner, I knew better than to raise my hopes and concentrated on keeping track of the transfers. When the announcement was made regarding Emiliano Viviano’s transfer, several people including myself thought it was about Ozil. Disappointed but not down, we moved on. Finally half an hour before the window closed, it was confirmed. Mesut Ozil was a Gunner. Cue mad celebrations by Arsenal fans around the world including a happy dance by yours truly. Mesut Ozil, the German wonder had to leave Real Madrid simply due to the arrival of Gareth Bale and Isco. One would find it hard to imagine any player pushing someone of Ozil’s magnitude, but that is the sad truth. Over the last three seasons, he had established himself as one of Madrid’s star players, accumulating 47 assists in La Liga, and creating numerous chances. The fact that the top assist leader in Europe’s top five leagues across the past 5 years can be frozen out of a team is unthinkable, and yet the glaring truth that we face today. Madrid needed to unload players, and they deemed Ozil surplus to requirements. Arsene Wenger seized his chance and completed the transfer coup of the summer. Ozil arrives at the Emirates with a sparkling reputation as Europe’s top playmaker, and as many would say, the best in the business at the present moment. He has made 4.07 key passes per game, which is more than double what players like Kaka and Angel Di Maria have been able to provide in Real’s midfield. Ozil’s ability to drift onto the flanks in order to find the space for his through balls and passes is another aspect that sets him apart from many playmakers, similar to Cazorla. After all, it truly takes a player of some class to bench Kaka, one of the world’s best. A passing accuracy of 85%, and one of the most intelligent minds in the footballing spectrum today, Ozil is truly a class apart, and one of the best signings Arsenal have made since the arrival of Dennis Bergkamp back in 1995. Bergkamp was proven quality when he was signed, and Ozil is the same. On being asked about the transfer, Ozil professed that Wenger had convinced him regarding the move, stating his plans and ideas for the team, and his role in the squad. The chance to leave Madrid ahead of a World Cup year to play regular football at a top team proved the icing on the cake, and within hours, Mesut finished his medical in Germany, and declared himself a Gunner, delighting fans around the world and leaving many Madridistas questioning Ancelotti’s decision to sell him. Ozil began his career at Schalke 04, before moving on to Werden Bremen where he started building his reputation as a playmaker and creative engine. The 15 million move to Real Madrid in 2010 was justified by his performances on the field. His arrival at Arsenal will allow Cazorla to take over the left winger role, which has no regular operator at the moment due to Lukas Podolski’s injury, which has sidelined him upto December. This would allow Ozil to make the no.10 role his own, as he has done with all his teams in the past. Fans can expect a creative, free thinking and intelligent player, who has one of the best eye for passes in the world. Combined with the likes of Cazorla, Wilshere, Walcott, Ramsey and Giroud, this truly has transformed Arsenal into a top team capable of challenging for titles. Arsene Wenger has truly outdone himself this time, as with one single swoop, he has transformed the state of Arsenal’s transfer dealings, and winning over any and all naysayers to his side. He will take time to adjust to the Premier League, but rest assured he will, and once he does, Arsenal will truly be a fearsome team to face. This shows that Arsenal mean business, and they will be out for trophies with renewed vigor this time around.
