Michael Netchtsky posted a picture not too long ago which was a photo of from the top end of North 8th street looking south. I grew up in that neighborhood for a few years and went to St. Francis from Sept 62 to Feb. 65. On the South East corner of nearby North 9th and Greenleaf on the sidewalk there was a painted yellow hopscotch board that I recall as being laid out like the figure below. And I also seem to remember Washington Elementary and St. Francis also had painted boards in their school grounds of this layout. Now thats getting on close to 50 years since I played this board, and my only 5% uncertainty is with squares 6 and 7. I remember that if you werent hopping over a square 1 and 2 were two footed together 3 got a single foot 4 and 5 were hopped on together 6 got single footed, 7 you jumped on with both feet 8 was a single foot and 9 and 10 also got jumped on at the same time. 8, naturally was the hardest square as it was the smallest. EVERYWHERE else in the country seemed to have boring layouts, and I have never seen a layout like the ones I remember having in Allentown. Does anyone remember playing on this sort of board? I suspect that board was there for a number of years before I started playing it and a number after. Do kids in A-town still play on a board like this? OF course you couldnt wait for a pair of good shoes to wear out because youd use the heel for hopscotch as your marker.
