Mondays November 24, 2014 (Editorial Comment) ZAMBIANS ARE NOT STUPID President Michael Sata knew why he never left power with his Deputy Guy Scott. Now the rest of the country knows why. From a front runner position the PF is now a damp squib with no prospect of ever rising to power again and the greatest tragedy is that the party has itself to blame. It tempted fate and reposed power in the hands of a man former President Sata deemed incapable of discharging the functions of the office of President. The results are showing. Indeed towards the end of his life Mr. Sata tried to distance himself and the party from the cabal of criminals who tried to usurp power from him, hence the re-alignment of the party which saw Edgar Lungu rise. The cartel and those close to President Sata knew that he was dying. They prepared for his death and their assumption of power. President Sata was fully aware of the schemes and was seriously mortified by the vigorous underhand campaign in which new grass root leadership was created in preparation for his death. The cartel has prepared well for the general conference. They have created new leadership and an electoral college that will ensure that their candidate, the woman who will protect their ill gotten wealth wins. That is why there has been insistence for the Conference. The outcome has been rigged. The rubbish and nonsense about the PF constitution is a ruse because nowhere in the history of the PF has a presidential candidate been appointed, approved, nominated or otherwise by the general conference. Mr. Sata was never presented to a congress before standing. This will be the first time and this time it is happening to give the semblance of democracy. The last time PF members demanded a general conference was in 2009 when Samu Zulu and Mubanga Chileshe held a press briefing at Court Yard Hotel. This demand did not go well with the PF as the two were beatened up and bundled up in a car. Dr Scott should not think we have short memories of events in the PF. Our point is that a leader must have the temperament of discernment and not exhibit haughty and condescending superiority by assuming that the people are ignorant. They know about meetings that took place in London and other places in preparation for the death of the President. They should have made better preparations than antagonize the party and the nation by creating acrimony that threatens the peace of the nation. It is also common sense that no sane general takes a divided army into battle because contention saps morale and drive. PF members have watched with shock, disbelief and utter incredulity as State House was turned into an arena of humiliation of their leaders. The PF, even if it fields former first lady Christine Kaseba, will be going into battle as a divided party. The likes of Willie Nsanda, confidant and campaign manager for President Michael Sata, whose office is at State House, were kept out by Dr. Scott, who contrived to make a quorum from a technical reading of the constitution. Zambians are not amused and this will show at the polls. Few will forgive Guy Scott; unfortunately he will not be there to see the dying throes of the party.Nobody is fooled by the constant reference to the constitution which has never applied before. PF members know that the party has been outmaneuvred by the cartel of thieves and crooks fighting to protect their ill-gotten wealth. These are the people from whom Mr. Sata had distanced himself. That is why it is incomprehensible that Guy Scott can take a divided party into a hastily arranged congress and expect Zambian people to vote for a candidate arising from such a corrupt process. It is impossible to arrange a congress of 6,000 people in eight days. As a friendly warning Dr. Scott and his friends must know that the cartel has moved on. Having effectively neutralized PF they are now pandering to HH in the hope of a reprieve, in the hope that he will compromise and fail to collect what is due to the Zambian people. The thought of Edgar Lungu in State House petrified them. With him at the helm, their days would have been severely numbered. In short thrift their corruption would have been brought before courts of law exposing them for what they truly are. Zambians are not stupid, they know what is happening and will not accept it.
