Montserrado County district # 9 Representative Munah Pelham-Youngblood has expressed disappointment over the high rate of illiteracy in Liberia. According to her, the gap between literate and illiterate Liberians continues to widen. She said “since 1847 up to present” the high rate of illiteracy in Liberia has not been reduced. The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) lawmaker was speaking recently when she officially launched the Hon. Munah E. Pelham-Youngblood Inter-Schools Academic Competition in Monrovia. The competition which is bringing together 54 schools from districts # 8, 9, and 10 in Montserrado County was launched under the theme: “Promoting Education for Excellence” and the slogan: “Who Own District # 9 Academically.” Trophies and medals as well as cash prizes would be awarded to winners and runners-up in the academic competition. Rep. Pelham-Youngblood pointed out that the provision of education to Liberians especially young people cannot be over emphasized in Liberia as a post-conflict nation. She stated that the minimizing or eradicating of illiteracy is clear within the Liberian constitution noting that, this has not been done. Speaking further, the CDC lawmaker disclosed that the launch of the academic competition is in fulfillment of promise she (Pelham-Youngblood) made to the students during the campaign period of the 2011 general and presidential elections. She named the categories of the competition as spelling bee for elementary students, quizzing for junior students and debate competition for senior high students. According to her, trophies, medals and cash prizes would also be awarded to the winners and runners-up in the competition.
