Moral and Ethical Philosophy: Environmental Ethics and Feminist - TopicsExpress

Moral and Ethical Philosophy: Environmental Ethics and Feminist Ethics In recent decades, a number of new ethical and moral theories have arisen which challenge the assumptions of the traditional moral theories. Environmental ethics challenges the assumption of traditional moral theory that the welfare or good of humans is the prime objective of moral theory. In contrast environmental ethics argues that the preservation of the natural environment should be the cornerstone of moral theory. The question can be put in this way: What duties do humans have with respect to the environment, and why? Do we have environmental obligations for the sake of human beings living in the world today, for humans living in the future, or for the sake of entities within the environment itself, irrespective of any human benefits? Another alternative theory to traditional moral theory is feminist ethics. Feminists argue that traditional moral theory depreciates and devalues women’s moral experience and does so in the following ways: more concerned with men’s issues, trivializes the domestic sphere, treats women as morally shallow, concerned exclusively with masculine moral traits, and favours masculine ways of moral reasoning. In response, feminists have developed a distinctive ethical theory that challenges the masculine assumptions of traditional moral theory. One field that unifies the concerns of environmental and feminist ethics is ecofeminism. Ecofeminists argue that women have a special connection with the environment and therefore have a common moral interest in preserving the environment and women’s role within it.
