More and more in my travels of helping survivors heal and thrive I - TopicsExpress

More and more in my travels of helping survivors heal and thrive I am directed to the “Mental Health” departments of hospitals and clinics. I can’t help but feel a bit taken back because I detect the stigma and shame associated with the words, “Mental Health” however, I do understand the title and why, but abuse SURVIVORS are not CRAZY! We are not what some refer to as basket cases, nut jobs, head cases, or insane! I DO understand why it’s called Mental Health but I would like to see something else more fitting and appropriate that would help put an end to the social stigma that society associates with abuse survivors. We never hear of the “MENTAL HEALTH” people reaching out to the people that abuse nor do they focus on prevention. THOSE PEOPLE ARE THE REAL MENTAL CASES. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts and suggestions on the matter. ~Sue
