We invite letters to be sent to the West Briton to put this person right on a few points! westbriton.co.uk/cash-starved-services-vanish-pound-180-000/story-21100011-detail/story.html Our Branch response is as follows to assist with facts and figures: Dear Editor, I am surprised that following the recognition of Cornish as a national minority, we still have to defend ourselves from anti-Cornish vitriol as expressed by Pat Rice in her letter published in the West Briton of 15th May, 2014. Pat appears to be another anti-Cornish hater who fails to understand basic funding. If the Cornish language did not get £120,000 from central government then Cornwall would not get it. That would go to Ulster Scots or some other language but would never come to Cornwall at all. Better we get something than nothing! Or would Pat rather Cornwall lose out again? The amount of funding for the Cornish language is laughably small – other language groups in countries like Wales, Scotland and Brittany looked at the announcement and thought we should get ten times the amount we received. With a properly devolved assembly, Scotland spends about £5million on their language every year – and still pay Westminster more than they receive from central government! Instead of hating us for getting the price of one Westminster champagne lunch, perhaps Pat could do something useful? Perhaps Pat could campaign for better libraries? Better mental health services? Better care facilities? More control on second homes? All of these are issues that Cornish groups campaign about without feeling the need to smear our language in the process. More people want more Cornish more of the time. Instead of hating this wonderful trend, why not get over it and work together for a better Cornwall for us all?
