Mosquito season is here! The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has confirmed the first case of chikungunya virus in a Mississippi resident who recently returned from Haiti. Several other potential cases are currently under investigation, and MSDH is warning travelers to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean nations to take extra precautions against mosquitoes. Follow these precautions to protect yourself and others from chikungunya virus, West Nile virus, and other mosquito-borne diseases: • Use a recommended mosquito repellent while you are outdoors. • Remove all sources of standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. • Wear loose, light-colored, long clothing to cover the arms and legs when outdoors. • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are prevalent. Mosquitoes that carry chikungunya virus are active during the day, especially at dawn and dusk.
