Most children entering grade school these days can identify, by sight, hundreds of name brands. Hold up a flash card with 3 diamonds and, though some will mispronounce, most will know were talking about a brand name car, Mitsubishi. Display the next card with a white apple, and they understand were pitching a computer, not an edible addition to their lunch sack. And show any child (on Earth) twin arches painted gold ... i dont think I need to go on. These children can identify two or three plants, at best. How did we get to this place in society? Not so long ago we maintained a connection to the soil and the Earth. We realized our place in the natural world and sought to maintain a balance with everything around us. Some cultures still do maintain a balance, however their numbers are dropping more and more each year. Is this the direction we should be headed? Weve all labored under the illusion that we get our paychecks from these same factories and corporations, We do not. Though we feel snug in our homes and apartments, they are not as secure as we may think. All of the many species that inhabit our planet with us, receive a collective paycheck from the idle field, the unused forest, the un-fished ocean, or the unmind mountains. They all supply the elements for our survival. I read somewhere recently that there is more shopping malls then high schools in North America. Should there be more of a balance between the worlds of commerce and education? Until then I will continue to discover wild foods and useful plants and better more efficient ways, that were always right beneath my nose and probably in between your toes as you were sunbathing in your backyard recently. My Nigerian friend, Emanuel and I will still poke fun at the local ESSO customers as I pretend to fill up my pedal bike with premium gas, as they spend half their paychecks on fuel, so they can go to jobs they hate, and buy shit they dont need. But hey, if you really want to talk about selfish people...if you live in a society that takes and doesnt replenish or give back....its too late. Youre already there.
