Most of the budding photographers in their initial years might have… asked opinion about dslr’s befor buying one for himself… might have asked which equipments others are using ..how others manage such beautiful pictures , how others manage to get everything in focus with a dslr …etc etc. The question about other’s equipments are by those casual users (in the developing stages ) who are ignorant of photographic techniques & post processing tools , even after owning a dslr, are not getting results similar to what he sees in print & visual media. The guys who can understand why their photographs are different from what they see in different forms of media, will try to improve their knowledge on photography which eventually will lead to acquiring post processing skills and upgrading the gear. Now a days when we search internet for improving photographic skills, we are encountering many misleading information. We are forced to believe that even a DLSR is not required to “ take” photographs. Many a time we are told that equipments doesn’t matter at all. We can see recommendations for lumia smartphones, galaxy S5 & sony xperia as alternatives to DSLR’s. Irony is that the people who are using the most advanced equipments for taking the images & for post processing, to the beginners/amateurs whoever asks for advice, recommend S5, lumia or xperia with an explanation that photographs are taken by photographer & not by the camera. Beginners /amateurs (photographers, not digital artists ) have to learn that the direct output from a camera , not a final presented one, are always dependent on equipments. And what we see on print /visual media is not a direct file even from the most advanced DSLR. Hours of post processing goes in to each of these photographs . So always buy the best gear which you can afford and be assured that you never miss a valuable moment on your DLSR sensor, be it any lighting conditions. Affordability should be the only selection criteria . If you , still are not convinced, take a Nikon D3100 with 18-55 mm lens (US $ 450) & a NikonD4s with 24-70 f2.8 (US $ 8500 ) for an after sunset beach shot and see how many of Nikon d3100 users can take a photograph, and even if they manage, compare with the output from D4s. ( If both gear combinations were same , Nikon obviously would n’t be charging US $ 8k more for D4s+24-70 f2.8 ) Some one with any of those recommended smart phones also can try some shots. :) A “ digital artist “ / post processing expert can make the d3100 output look better after hours of post processing. Still can it be compared with a direct out from the D4s? and if you are a post processing expert , your photograph from D4s still can be made better. Even for the guys who only use Auto mode, is D4s an option if they can afford? Of course, it is ; any ways who is going to see the mode dial while you are shooting ??:):):) So in short , for who ever “ take “ a photograph, equipment/gear is important. For those who “make” photograph, creativity & post processing skills as well are required. To all the budding photographers out there, When some one didn’t responded to your queries, …. gave you misleading or incorrect information ..recommended S5 instead of a DSLR ..etc.. etc.. just say “ I don’t give a buck about you ” and move on.. Destiny will provide all budding photographers few mentors who are unselfish, benevolent & caring, from whom you can learn everything you will ever need. Wait patiently for yours. :) Cheers.
