Most people dont even know this chapter of World War II--close to half million European, US &other allied civilians were prisoners of the Japanese --they were held in terrible conditions--and unlike the Japanese we have acknowledged our error in interning Japanese Americans and compensated them --however we NEVER made Japan pay one dime to Allied internees who were barely fed and subjected to beatings, torture rape and forced labor prostitution. Japan rebuilt its economy partially on looted funds form these people--especially the Dutch and British. I have met and interviewed two of these women --one American and one Dutch--young teenagers at the time and like this woman they will never forgive.The American woman said if the Japanese would just acknowledge them it would make a difference. But theyre taught in school that the US started the war and of course we go through our national day of apology every august for the A-bombs-which had they not been dropped and a ground invasion necessary --ALL allied prisoners were to be exterminated POWs and Internees.
