~~ Ms. Scruffy, won out for getting in to feed! ( I always know which one she is, as shes been returning to the Ranch, every year, for the past 8 yrs. Shes got a shorter beak, than any other Hummingbird I have, & her Feathers, instead of being sleeked back like all the others, she looks like shes been through a car wash, with a bad blow dry! And shes short & squat!! I dont think shell be back next year, as Hummingbirds Life Spans are short, especially if they can make through theyre 1st yr. of Life. The Longest known Life Span of a Hummingbird, was of one that was caught and Banded in Arizona, when she was a yearling. Amazingly, she was re-captured in the same place, where she was found, 12 yrs., later! When left out in the Wild: Life Span is anywhere between: 3 -5 yrs. for the Male & 4 -7 yrs. for the Female. If wild, yet also being fed, like here, with Sugar water Feeders: Males: 6 -8 yrs., Females: 7 - 10 yrs. The reason the Females, will live longer, mainly, is because they leave the area, where they Summer, in. Opposed to most of the Males: They will stay, wherever they are, as long as they are being fed. ( So put youre FEEDERS AWAY, after the 1st FROST!) Otherwise, the Males, are Fair Game, to Hawks, Chicken Owls, Osprey, etc.!! ~~
