Music News ! Lordes ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ Video Is Darker Than Ever ! On the eve of her 18th birthday, Lorde is showing a drastic departure from “Royals” by dropping the video for “Yellow Flicker Beat” — ditching the tennis courts and her group of schoolmates for a dirty motel in solitude. The video for the “Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ track starts with her chanting, beckoning us to come closer to the faintly lit room in the distance. Soon, she shows herself sitting alone in a motel, looking complacent and sophisticated with a polished pompadour, singing, “I’m a princess cut from marble/smoother than a storm/And the scars that mark my body, they’re silver and gold.” If you’ve been paying attention to her Twitter, this scene is one of the several stills she teased for the video on Wednesday. While we’re used to the “Hunger Games” soundtrack curator being a bit dark, the aesthetic of the video is different from the look of “Royals” and even “Team.” She’s no longer just the girl who’s “never seen a diamond in the flesh.” She takes us on a bit of journey, revealing us to herself in pieces, leading us to different places and opting for more extravagant attire than the “Royals” white shirt. We follow her from a motel room, the middle of a highway, an airplane hangar and a fancy ’20s era cocktail party — the only place where she encounters other people. Her erractic, emotive moves in a red suit break the darkness of night, but even her dancing seems menacing. Go watch the video, the “Team” singer is gracefully saying goodbye to her teenage self and truly coming into her own. Thanks for the early birthday present, Lorde.
