My BIL Keith asked me to help him explain why people think Die - TopicsExpress

My BIL Keith asked me to help him explain why people think Die Hard is a Christmas film. My answer, written in a state of exhaustion, was as follows: Die Hard is the heart-warming tale of Detective John McLane who has travelled cross-country from New York to Los Angeles in the hope of reconciling with his estranged wife, Holly, and spending Christmas with his young family. As you probably know, he and the other guests of Nakatomi Towers are waylaid by thieves masquerading as terrorists, led by the villainous Hans Gruber. John resolves to defeat the crooks, not merely out of policemans duty or survival instinct, but to ensure he succeeds in repairing his marriage and reuniting with his children. Along the way, he even helps the doubt-ridden, washed-up cop Al conquer his guilt and post-traumatic stress over killing a kid: this empowers Al to kill the final henchman during the denouement of the film, a genuine Christmas miracle. This movie ends with John and Holly exchanging vows of love, a sign that- for this year, at least - it was Christmas, not hostages, that was truly saved.
