My fellow basketball history buff, my main man Thomas Cook, told - TopicsExpress

My fellow basketball history buff, my main man Thomas Cook, told me something this morning thats been bothering me all day. He was listening to the Mike & Mike radio program, and these dudes were naming the best players to play pro ball in the big cities. Now u can have some good debates with that question. Kobe or Magic? Bird or Russ? But at least one a these clowns, maybe both, threw out Dave Bing over Isiah Lord Thomas. Ok. Dave Bing is a very nice man, and was a very good, all star caliber player, on some very bad Pistons teams in the 70s. Hes basically, his generations Mitch Richmond. But Isiah? His squad held down Jordans bulls for years, including 90, the year before the first of the 3peat. They beat Birds Celtics in 88, just 2 years after the 86 Celtics, who are still in the conversation for GOAT. They beat Magics Lakers in 89(Magic & Byron were hurt & theyd just swept the west, but still), just 2 years after the 87 Lakers, still my pick as GOAT. Theres a reason the 80s All Star Games will never be topped. There were clear leaders on those teams, Magic & Isiah, & it was beautiful every year. No ones ever run a team as great as those 2, not before or since. One of the greatest travesties in basketball history, will always be Isiah being left off the Dream Team, to appease Mike & Scotty(its never been a good idea too piss off Michael Jordan). Isiah shouldve been the 4th pick, right after Mike, Magic, & Larry. Isiah Thomas is to me, unquestionably, the 3rd greatest point guard of all time(trailing only Magic & Oscar), and the greatest pure point(guys who only would, could, or should, play that position) ever. U could make a case for Cousy instead based on historical significance, but then your stuck with stupid ideas like Mikan over Shaq or something. U can only rank those 50s dudes so high, it was a different sport. Anyway, in NBA history, the following guys are the only Alpha Dogs to ever lead their team to back 2 back championships: Mikan. Russell. Magic. Hakeem(weak competition both years, almost shouldnt count). Jordan. Shaq. Kobe. AND, Isiah. Thats the list. I hated Isiah Thomas as a basketball player, but Id never deny his greatness. This clip is actually from a losing effort. The 88 Finals. But after watching men like Pierce & James being literally carried off the floor by teammates, Im reminded of Kobe sinking 2 clutch free throws to clinch a playoff berth, then walking off the floor under his own power, with a blown out achilies tendon. Im reminded of the flu game. And Im reminded of being 12 years old, & having nightmares about this... m.youtube/watch?v=BQRYE-p1muA
