My friend Javaid Rana while narrating root causes of the current mess, rightly concludes: OUR HATE BLURS OUR INSIGHT ON TALIBAN FIASCO We are looking at small branches of a tree and completely ignoring the very root of the problem. We all have genuine reasons to hate the Taliban for very obvious reasons. But sadly our hate and anger has blurred our assessment which does not let us see the very root cause behind the lingering controversy on whether to have talks or ground operation against the Taliban. It is not question of PML-N or PTI trying to bring an end to 11 years long insurgency through talks but bigger question is why Washington disgraced an elected Prime Minister after giving him assurance behind the scene to suspend the drone operations to facilitate talks with the Taliban while Pentagon did not take much time to act upon intelligence supposedly provided by Pakistan army and army run intelligence network---- a usual practice in most of the drone strikes against the desire of Prime Minister ? We should not forget that PPP government during election campaign and after coming into power in 2008’s polls sloganeered to hold talks with the Taliban. Zardari said it so many times the then. But he was befooled comfortably. A systematic situation was created and the Taliban were made to make blunders after blunder with Sufi Muhammad not settling down on anything declaring “Constitution as an un-Islamic and hence not acceptable”. Tv cameras were facilitated to show the Taliban starting march towards capital---- just 100 kilometre away from Islamabad---. The West was threatened into believing that the Taliban were going to take over nukes while every body knows nukes are safe and were safe and whatever transfer of technology took place in the past that was with the due consent of “ real custodians of state of Pakistan’. Swat operation was conducted which as per military and PPP version was successful…… with at least 11000 gone missing and helpless families still running around for help even on the street of Islamabad. Thousands of civilians killed, proprieties lost at a large scale. And years after the Taliban have returned--- with Major General recently killed and even Malala was almost killed until survived by a miracle. It is just tip of the ice berg. In rest of military operations in other parts of tribal areas, the situation is far more serious with extra ordinary humanitarian crises. People I have spoken with say they are sandwiched between the Taliban and military and drones. Over three million remain displaced in all such military operations,,, many … many thousands killed. While sitting in Islamabad --- it is indeed easy to wish for a ground offensive in tribal areas and get rid of them. Please ask tribal people who again would bear the brunt of our misdirected anger . Once again the Taliban would ---like always--- slip into Afghanistan. Once again chaos would be created. It is does not matter who is killed among the Taliban in drone attacks. Their leadership is replaced. The anger of the killing of their so called leadership would be directed against innocent common people who would be targeted. Political establishment would face threat to their lives. Cities would be put on high alert as in fact has already started.... a usual practice in this kind of situations just for the sake of projection in the international media. It is dirty vicious cycle that we unwittingly advocate without understanding the humanitarian chaos that was followed after ground offensives in South Wazirstan and Swat. I doubt Nawaz government has the ability to avert to repeat the mistake of Zardari but it seems once again there are elements who are all out to sustain and this time ---intensify chaos to further their so-called geo-strategic goals when NATO is all set to pull out most of its troops.
