My grandfather served in WW1- but I honestly know nothing about - TopicsExpress

My grandfather served in WW1- but I honestly know nothing about his service. My uncle Bernie served in the pacific in WWII. I believe he was awarded the distinguished service medal (I thought it might be the medal of honor, but I dont see his name)- no one in the family knew about this until his funeral when one of my cousins found the commendation along with other items from the war in a trunk in the attic. he never talked about his experiences and had no desire to do so. I dont think they took pride in their service. I think they felt they did what they needed to do and wanted to put it behind them. Serving your fellow neighbors in any capacity is something we should all do in our lives. Some may find pride in this. Others see it as their duty. We should all be thankful of others who put their own welfare and safety on the line for others. We need to hold those that force others to sacrifice needlessly or predicated on lies accountable. We need to do everything we can to prevent anyone having to take up arms against another person. Spending money ensuring people around the world have basic human rights; food, water, shelter, education and access is a better investment than spending money around the world to fight those that rise up because they dont. All war, even in victory, is a funeral.
