My husband is in the hospital again, this time with pneumonia, and - TopicsExpress

My husband is in the hospital again, this time with pneumonia, and he has made the decision to stop all medical treatments and begin hospice care. He has end stage renal disease, congestive heart failure, spinal stenosis, arthritis and he says the cocktail of medications he takes make him feel out of it. He has no energy, no appetite and no interest in life, and while hes not eager to die, he doesnt want to live in his pain-racked body any more, going through his days like a zombie because of all his meds. When he came to the realization that the quality of his life is never going to improve he decided it was time to depart with dignity. Today the hospital social worker came to his room and talked to us about his decision, and she helped us get a doctors order allowing the hospice workers to see his medical records. Jan wants to die at home, so tomorrow there will be a meeting between us, the hospice team and the hospital social worker to plan his care until the end. Even though the hospice team will come to the house daily to assist with palliative medications, lifting and bathing, as his primary care giver I will have to be here 24/7 until its over. I called both of his brothers and now Im contacting other family and friends to let them know Jans end is near. If you are a praying kind of person, please pray that my husband will have a peaceful, easy ending, preferably in his sleep.
