My old friend Mattias Paulsson just messaged me out of the blue - TopicsExpress

My old friend Mattias Paulsson just messaged me out of the blue from Örebro Sweden. We were roommates on a kibbutz in Israel in 1981 and we sure had some laughs together! But none were better than the time I traveled up to Stockholm from Göteborg in 1984, and he met me there. We wanted to go see Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, who were playing at some kind of outdoor concert in what looked like a huge beer garden with a stage at one end, but we couldn’t afford the tickets, and it was fenced in so you couldn’t see through. I noticed there was a tree outside that fence, immediately behind the stage. So Mattias and I climbed it and enjoyed a killer view of the concert, 15 feet above and maybe 20 feet behind the band. At one point, in the middle of singing “The Fever,” Southside Johnny said something to a few of the other band members and then walked down some stairs off the beck of the stage. The Asbury Jukes kept riffing on the song, and suddenly Southside Johnny opened up a door in the fence, directly below us, that we hadn’t even noticed was there. Next thing you know Southside Johnny was peeing up against the outside of the fence behind the stage…not even 15 feet directly below us…while the band kept playing. Of course I politely waited until he was finished before I hollered out, “Yo, Southside! I’m from Philly!” He looked up at me and hollered, “Yo Philly! What the hell are you doing up that tree?” I said, “I can’t afford the ticket, I’m a street musician.” He flashed me a big New Jersey smile and a thumbs up, then went back through the door in the fence, up the stairs and onto the stage, grabbed the mic, and resumed singing, “She’s got the fever…oh, he’s got the fever…nothing a po’ boy can do…”
