My peeps, you need to read this post by Greg Greenway. Its both hilarious and inspiring: It is not what we get. But who we become, what we contribute... that gives meaning to our lives... - Tony Robbins Do you know what the difference between Heaven and Hell is? In Hell everybody sits at a table and the table is covered in all the worlds finest foods. An unlimited supply of every type of cuisine you could imagine prepared by all the worlds best chefs. The problem is that each person only has these stupidly long spoons to eat with. Each spoon is so long that no one can use them to feed themselves and as a result everyone starves. In Heaven, the same table is there. The same table with all of the worlds most tastiest foods. Every succulent meal your tastebuds could imagine is at the table. The people in Heaven have the same long spoons, but they dont starve. The diffiderence is that the people at the table in Heaven use their spoons to feed the people on the other side of the table. Everyone works together feeding each other and nobody goes hungry. This is the Allegory Of The Long Spoons. The story has nothing to do with religion. Its an old parable told in many different cultures about the power of working together. In my Inner Circle Coaching Programme I teach the most cutting edge strategies of Social Circle Mastery and one of the big paradigm shifts I try to get my clients to make is the shift from Social Exchange to Social Contribution. Social Exchange is when you give to someone but you are expecting something in return. A lot of people will evolve to this stage. They still play Win/Win, but only as long as they end up receiveing something in return. If you have ever felt annoyed or frustrated because you did so much for someone but they just took and took and took, then you are still operating at the Social Exchange. Your goal is to get to Social Contribution. The stage where you see the bigger picture. At this level you are all about Contributing to society, people and your social circle. As with most principles of success, this is counterintuitive but once you really stop playing the Exchange game. Once you really let go of what you will get in return and only look to Contribute, not only will you have more success, but you will actually have less people take from you. When people are at the Exchange level, they will only take from others for so long because eventually they start to feel on overwhelming sense of owing someone. Exchange is all about balancing up your giving and receiving. This means you will often get people who are still in Exchange, turn down gifts that you offer them. They do this because in their mind they feel on some level if they accept something from you, that they owe you something in return and they dont want to be in that position. Once you get to Contribution, everything changes. Imagine you spend time getting a gift for someone you care about. Imagine you go out, do some research, read up on stuff this person cares about and you really put time and effort into the gift. Now imagine how you would feel if when you present the person you care about with this gift, that they tell you they cant and wont accept it. Sucks right? Social Contribution isnt just about contributing, its also being happy to receive. As you start attracting badasses and Social Superstars into your life, they are going to offer you help. They are going to do things for you and you have to accept. They do this because they understand that its not about keeping score on who did what for whom and vice versa. They have evolved to Social Contribution because they understand that its all about the process. The more people in their social circle that commit to Contribution the more success and excellence that will be available for everyone. Start moving from an Exchange mindset to a Contribution mindset. You will not only repel leaches while attracting superstars into your life, but you will also see remarkable opportunities and doors open for you. Trust me on this one. This is powerful stuff. Have a great weekend.
