My sister has Alzheimers. My husband and I make the drive to feed - TopicsExpress

My sister has Alzheimers. My husband and I make the drive to feed her. She is not in care, so we help family with her. My amazing brother decided to create a Middle Eastern meal for her and we had Mezze, ... dolmas, humus and all kinds of vegetables to dip and kofta.. he ground the spices by hand and did them over the BBQ on skewers. ( lamb) we had fantastic pita bread and garlic sauce and labneh from the Lebanese Taverna and Artichoke salad and watermelon and she ate, ate, ate.. and then polished off pomegranates. You have no idea how wonderful this was because she weighs next to nothing. It is also remarkable because she ate the leftovers today. So I changed up. I am very stubborn and I find ways to entice her with food. She is not rational but she is hungry.. and I love her. So today I challenged her with fresh corn on the cob, really good potato salad ( red potatoes) flounder and salad and banana pudding. And she ate. The teacher in me like the challenge of creating the opportunity for he to make choices. She of course does not remember much and so a flash of memory is like a gift. My sister and I watched her eat and eat and we smiled. There is satisfaction from the smallest gesture for us. she became sleepy and faded away, full . Its the same satisfaction of accomplishing something with students. I am now home smiling. She is totally out of it for the most part. But I feel accomplished , three meals in a week in a row. Not going to tell you about the fried chicken baked potato and double cornbread and sliced tomatoes and dukes. ( ethnic. my kind )
