Myths of multi-tasking: Why it’s very bad for workplace productivity Commentator Paul Mahoney says that one of the many issues he has seen across a majority of organisations is the dysfunction of multi-tasking and that there are a number of reasons why this is a less than optimal way to work. According to an article in Psychology Today, navigating multiple tasks can actually take up as much as 40% of a worker’s productive time. It has been shown that a person who is multi-tasking wastes time in context switching. That is, the person must close out one task (mentally, logically and maybe even physically) and then open the next task with all the associated overheads of understanding what needs to be done, what files need to be opened, who needs to be talked with to understand the task more fully, etc. When the person does this two or three times a day and then revisits a task closed earlier in the day and opens/closes the same set of tasks within the day, time wasted. These additional efforts can be categorized as work not done, based upon the assumption that the time and effort of opening/closing the tasks is non-value added work. What do you think?
