NEAL AND TIFF WITH UTEP: This mornings Albuquerque Journal carried a story on basketball coach Neals tiff with UTEP in 2011 over a practice session in the Pit, effectively ending the rival. I cant understand how either coach, Neal an assistant at the time, could be so dense as to end a rivalry that was a guaranteed big payday. Would you rather play UTEP, Coach Neal, or Arkansas State? Which one gives you a return on your buck? Were you a part of the deal to get a mere five million dollars out of a Pizza place over ten inflationary years to help pay for a $60 million gym? It seems to me coaches should be required to earn a minor at least in economics before they are allowed to be head coaches, or athletic directors for that matter. I mean, you can drive a load of Lobos to El Paso in three hours in two vans and stop in TorC for a burger. The cost is right, and one of car dealers here will undoubtedly sponsor the vans and gasoline and buy lunch. They might even let you drive on the flatlands. Youll play before a capacity crowd, and could be back at 3 a.m. so you wouldnt need a motel. Okay, thats a little much. But playing non-competitive schools when you could play UTEP is a crime.
