NEWS FROM DATHMANDU From Lovely Sue and Ed, who have recently returned from 2 weeks with the Children . Here is there account on the fantastic time they had with the kids: “The kids are great, growing and achieving at school. Here is a personal note on each of them: • Bikram came to the home 5 years ago and started school in Class 1. He is now in Class 9 and doing extremely well especially when you consider he skipped 3 classes. He has grown into a quiet, intelligent, thoughtful man who hasn’t decided what he will do after school but hopes to complete +2 (years 11 & 12). • Soma is also in Class 9 and has topped her class for the past 2 years. She is obviously a very intelligent girl with a wicked sense of humour. Her English is probably the best in the home. • Asmita is in Class 10 and doing well, although Optional Math (which is not an option) is giving her a challenge. She wants to go onto Science +2 and do nursing. She is taller than me now, as are most people, and is a true lady. • Nissan is also in Class 10, being challenged by ‘not so optional’ maths and has his sights set on Science +2 to progress to Engineering. He has the ability and commitment to get there. Nissan continues to be a sensitive, well-mannered gentleman. • Tulasi has improved scholastically each year. He is still the playful, happy boy he always was but now towers over me. Having his brothers at the home makes his smile even broader. • Nareesh has grown so much. He now needs to be shown how to shave. His school work is excellent and his drawings are breathtaking. We left Derwent pencils for him and Suttam with the hope that they will create enough art work to produce a calendar – a carry on from Alex Mandau’s idea. • Suttam, like Nareesh has grown so much and is an amazing drawer. The boys came 1st and 2nd in a school art competition. Suttam has also improved his grades, has improved significantly with his English and again has a wicked sense of humor. His maturity when lending a hand is noticeable. • Promila is the quiet achiever. She always has a smile on her face while she sits back watching everything that goes on around her. She has grown into a very pretty young lady who gets along with everyone. • Suddasam is our newest family member. He was identified by the Social Welfare Department as a child victim of the civil war. The whereabouts of his parents is unknown. It is also not known if they are dead or alive. He is quiet but popular with the other children. School was initially a challenge for him but he has improved considerably, passing all subjects last exams. • Rupok, Tulasi’s brother, has taken every opportunity living with SDC has given him and achieved a lot. He does well at school and has enough grasp of English to be able to carry on a conversation. He is well liked by the other kids and is a real family member. • Chek is still the mature little man for his age. He is not as shy as he once was, although has no need for attention just for attention sake. He has been 1st or 2nd in his class for the past 2 years and excels in drawing as well. • Srijana is maturing into a young lady and almost as tall as me. She likes nothing more than to be sat down and chatted with although she would rarely demand it. Her school work has improved significantly over the past year. If someone walks up behind you and puts their hands over your eyes, a sure guess it’s Srijana. • Kopila is no longer the cute little girl….she is the very pretty young girl, with a smile and persona that makes you happy every day. She too loves to sit and chat and has a never ending list of questions…just like Soma now I come to think of it. School work has never been too challenging for her and she continues to excel. • Dipesh…..still has the reputation of being a devil. He is regularly in trouble at school and at the home, but just for the usual ‘boy’ things. I can’t help but laugh, which I know isn’t the right thing to do, so I then have a chat with him. His school results are very good and when we are there he does behave well. He does need attention and I am happy to give it to him. • Sugrit, Tulasi’s baby brother, has settled into the home well. He has a smile that will melt you, which therefore allows him to get away with things. He has topped his class for the past year and is slowly learning English. You should have seen the smile on his face when he got new clothes for Dashain and new shoes that light up when he walks. He nearly walked into the wall watching the lights. Our lovely Haramayar and Ruth continue to dedicate their love and care in looking after the children. Haramayar continues to be an absolute gem; she is the mother to all of the children and apparently spoils Sugrit dreadfully..Like Haramayar, Ruth seems to have limitless energy and her English continues to improve; her sense of humour is always a joy. Ed and I also decided to take the family on a trip. The vote was Ghorka, a 5 hour trip NW of KTM. We headed to the ancient palace on Sunday, walking, 1621 stairs up. And then 1621 stairs down. The boys swam in the river and built dams while the modest girls paddled. The business side of things: We are currently working with a sponsor, investigating new premises for the family. Hopefully this will work out as it would bring a significant improvement to their living conditions. We will keep you updated…. Our ongoing challenges, apart from daily expenses, will be education expenses. Asmita and Nissan will start the flow of moving from junior school to senior school and then onto college. This is going to significantly increase our costs, as senior schooling and college are significantly more expensive than junior school. The strength of the US $, or the weakness of the Nepali rupee, has kept our costs under control to date, with the increases in budget being due to more children and the children getting older – eating more, needing larger clothes, shoes etc. We are required to have the books in Nepal audited each year. This will happen at the end of the year. At that time I will be able to put together an estimated budget for 2014. Thank you all for your support. You are supporting and raising a wonderful group of people! Best wishes” Sue Clark Pitrolo, International Director, SDCN
